1. Why do we need Creek Week?

Among several reasons:  

•  Trash and storm debris clog channels which creates local flooding problems
•  Chemical fertilizers, pesticides, motor oil & paints pollute the water, killing plants & wildlife, and contaminates drinking water sources
•  Sewer backups and overflows are harmful to local waterways
•  Stream bank erosion means loss of valuable trees and wildlife habitat

2. How long has Citrus Heights participated?

3. How can I help at home?

• Never use a storm drain as a dump for any kind of waste
• Non-compostable green waste should be disposed of in the regular garbage cart
• Minimize use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to avoid poisoning waterways and wildlife. 
• Use biological alternatives to harsh fertilizers or pesticides. 
• Dispose of chemicals, oil, paint or other toxic material at County Hazardous Materials Division
• Protect native stream side vegetation to help prevent bank erosion

4. What are the benefits?

• Clean streams and attractive green spaces add scenic value to property and homes
• Creeks and green belts buffer traffic noise in neighborhoods
• Stream corridors provide healthy habitats for wildlife
• Clear channels carry storm water safely to the rivers
• Flowing water, trees and green ways help moderate Sacramento valley temperatures
• Creek trails provide play areas for children and walking, jogging and bicycling routes away from traffic

5. Why do you need volunteers? How do I sign up?

• Citrus Heights has over 26 miles of creeks impacted by storm runoff, tree debris and windblown litter
• Annual rains promote vigorous brush growth that can become overgrown
• Maintaining healthy water ways improves local communities
• Community presence deters illegal dumping, loitering and littering
• Many families look for community service opportunities 
• Many schools encourage student service hour requirements
