Construction on the Auburn Boulevard Complete Streets, Phase 2 Project will begin on July 22nd. Phase 2 improvements will extend the Auburn Boulevard Plan’s vision of a safer, updated roadway with enhanced amenities for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users and motorists.
The Auburn Boulevard Complete Streets, Phase 2 improvements include undergrounding of overhead utilities, installation of bicycle lanes and wide sidewalks, upgrading traffic signals to meet current standards, increasing safety and visibility through decorative street lighting, beautifying the corridor with new landscaping and trees, replacing old storm drain infrastructure, enhancing transit stops for ADA compliance and providing a unique identity through the use of a “Welcome to Citrus Heights” gateway structure. The project will end with a full roadway overlay for smoother driving and new striping for improved safety.
In order to construct the improvements, crews will enact 24/7 single-lane closures for the project’s duration. Lane closures will occur only in areas along Auburn Boulevard with active construction and will depend on the construction schedule. With extensive improvements like undergrounding and reconstructing all new infrastructure construction is expected to last several years. Our team estimates the project will be completed in the fall of 2026; however, weather, unknown underground conditions, and the required coordination with utility companies and the multitude of project stakeholders could affect the construction timeline. By permitting 24/7 single-lane closures during this project, the City has saved significant construction time and an estimated $2.9 million.
Businesses along Auburn Boulevard will remain open during construction and the City encourages residents to continue supporting local businesses. “Business Open” signage will be placed at all open driveways informing members of the public locations of safe access to and from the adjacent private properties and businesses.
85% of Phase 2 construction is funded by non-general funds, including competitive grants. The remaining funds are provided through general funds and other local revenues. The Sacramento Area Council of Governments played a pivotal role in securing the largest portion of competitive grant funding, making this project possible.
The Auburn Boulevard Plan, adopted in 2005, set the framework for developing the Auburn Boulevard Corridor from Sylvan Corners to the northern city limits and is the City’s largest public works project to date. Phase I of the Project accomplished a complete corridor update from Sylvan Corners to Rusch Park in 2015.
Beginning in late August, the Auburn Boulevard Project team will host office hours at Rusch Community Park for business owners, residents and travelers to discuss the project’s developments. Specific dates and times will be shared as the date nears. Until the August office hours begin, staff are available to set up calls or meetings as-needed. If any member of the community has questions or wishes to discuss the project, please email ABCS2@citrusheights.net or call (916) 727-4770 to schedule a time to meet with a representative from the City’s project management team.
