1. Do all permits require plan review?

Not all permits require plan review. Most re-roof, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical permits are issued over-the-counter. Structural modifications, commercial tenant improvements and other more involved projects do require plan review. For additional clarification, view the plan submittal and review page.

2. How many sets of plans are needed?

We require 3 sets all new commercial and new residential projects. View the plan submittal and review page for more information.

3. When are the approvals of other departments or agencies needed?

At the time plans are submitted to the Building and Safety Division, the permit technician will inform the applicant if other department or agency approvals will be required. When in doubt, give us a call at 916-727-4760 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

4. How long does the plan review take?

Plan review generally takes 10 business days for a 1st submittal and 5 business days for resubmittals.

5. When do I need a building permit?

Permits are necessary for any work that physically changes or adds to your property. Please view the building permit requirements and exemptions page for additional information.

6. How much does a building permit cost?

Permit costs are based on the valuation of the work. The minimum cost for permit is $67, which includes 1 inspection. The Building and Safety Division has fee schedules available for re-roofs, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work.
