On February 9, 2017, the California Public Utilities Commission approved an overlay that will add the new area code 279 to the 916 area code region. This new area code overlay will require a new dialing procedure. An overlay does not require customers to change their existing area code but does require customers to include the area code for all local calls, including calls within the same area code.To complete calls from a landline phone, the new dialing procedure requires anyone with a 916 area code to dial 1 + area code + telephone number. This means that all calls in the 916 area code that are currently dialed with seven digits will need to be dialed using 1 + area code + telephone number. To complete calls from a cellular or mobile phone, callers may dial the area code + telephone number or 1 + area code + telephone number whenever placing a call from a phone number with a 916 area code.
Effective August 12, 2017, you should begin using the new dialing procedures whenever you place a call from the 916 area code.
